Thoughts On The Venti

I have run the Venti 100-shot drill my last three range sessions. (Actually, I did it twice last night.) It’s a great workout, and it’s already having a positive impact on my shooting. The “shooting with with your eyes closed” portion is especially valuable, just a very efficient way to build and improve index. The Venti will continue to be a normal part of my every range session for the foreseeable future, quite possibly forever.

Having said that, if you’re planning on shooting this drill, I have to warn you, it’s not as easy, or as fun, as Travis makes it look in the video. There is a very steep learning curve here.

One of the reasons this drill is so valuable is that it requires an EXTREMELY high level of mental focus. There is a reason that Travis – and I can only assume he’s been doing it for years – keeps saying in the video, “Take a break if you need to.” Even he has to take periodic breaks while running this drill. So do I. “Break” meaning “Get the gun down out of your face, take a few breaths, relax your eyes and your body and your mind, then get back into it.”
